University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Placement and Proficiency Testing

Placement Testing

Chemistry, Physics, and Foreign Languages

The purpose of the Urbana placement exams is to find out how much you have learned in a subject so that we can match you with the appropriate Urbana course in that subject. The Center for Teaching Excellence offers online placement exams in Chemistry, Physics, French, German, Latin, and Spanish.

Incoming Summer and Fall 2012 students who have accepted their offer of admission will be able to log into the online Chemistry, Physics, and Foreign Languages (German, French, Latin, and Spanish) exams starting May 1, 2012. You need to complete these tests at least 2 weeks before attending your Spring Registration program.

The Department of Mathematics coordinates the online ALEKS Math Placement Test. To take your ALEKS math exam, you need to log in through the ALEKS website, which also has instructions and answers to frequently asked questions.

Proficiency Testing and Course Credit

The purpose of the Urbana proficiency exams is to find out whether you have mastered a course's content well enough that you are eligible to earn Urbana course credit. Proficiency credit is also awarded on the basis of sufficiently high scores on the Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.
