ESL Courses: Frequently Asked Questions
What courses can prospective ITAs take in order to qualify to retake the SPEAK Test?ESL 504 and ESL 506 are specifically designed for prospective ITAs. Enrollment in either ESL 504 or ESL 506 qualifies graduate students to retake the SPEAK Test as long as they enrolled in one of these courses after the last time they took the SPEAK Test. Graduate students also may take ESL 510, although the EPT (English Placement Test) is required for enrollment in ESL 510.
What is the difference between ESL 504 and ESL 506?
ESL 504 and ESL 506 are both advanced courses in oral English. ESL 504 focuses on pronunciation. ESL 506 focuses on language skills for teaching, teaching skills, and the culture of U.S. classrooms. Instructors in both courses administer a diagnostic exam on the first day of class and provide a recommendation to students about course placement. Students with pronunciation needs are directed to ESL 504, and those without pronunciation problems are directed to ESL 506.
When are ESL 504 and ESL 506 offered?
These courses are offered every fall, spring, and summer semester.
If enrollment is closed, what should students do to get into a class?
If ESL 504 or ESL 506 is closed, graduate students should attend the first scheduled meeting in one of these courses in order to take the diagnostic test and to let the instructor know of their interest in enrollment.
Who is given priority for enrolling in ESL 504 and ESL 506?
Priority is given to graduate students whose academic units want to appoint them as teaching assistants.
